CARROLLTON, TX (May 6, 2020) –
Austin-based Hellas Construction is currently converting the natural grass field at Newman Smith High School to synthetic turf. When Newman Smith High School’s students return to campus, the Trojans will have a new field of play that will bring the community together.
Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District is making a strong investment in upgrading athletic facilities across the District. Hellas is also onsite at Ranchview, Creekview, and RL Turner High Schools building synthetic turf fields.
“Through this investment, CFBISD is creating a home field experience on campus for students throughout the District,” said Dr. John E. Chapman III, CFBISD’s Superintendent.
Renee Putter, Athletic Director for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, said, “We wanted to invest in our student athletes. This multi-campus project will enable each school to cultivate a school spirit and deliver a home field advantage to virtually every student in the District.”
Students and academic athletes participating in a range of school-sponsored and extracurricular activities will enjoy use of the new fields. The upgrades will benefit Cheerleaders, Yell Leaders, Track and Field, Cross Country, PE, Band, and ROTC, in addition to Soccer and Football players.
Crystal Perez, Smith’s Girls Head Soccer Coach, said, “Because of this field, our soccer team and virtually all of our student body will have access to an exceptional field of play.”
The Trojans logo and school colors will stand out when looking at the field. The Trojans will play on Hellas’ Matrix Helix™ synthetic turf system—the same system used by the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. This turf system is also used by the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and Jacksonville Jaguars and will soon be used by the Raiders, Chargers, and Rams. A Cushdrain® pad will be installed under the field to enhance player protection and absorb the impact of athletes’ falls. The D-Zones will use with both synthetic turf and epiQ Tracks® materials.
“We are eager to see the field, and I can’t wait to get my team out there,” said Jarred Garcia, the Boys Head Soccer Coach.
Construction and installation of the field will be complete by the first week in July.
Paul Ressa, Smith High School’s Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator, said, “When the kids return to campus, they will love the new field at Smith. Access to excellent athletic facilities will help our students make the most of their high school experience. This new field will help unite our school community as we resume normal life.”
