Matrix®Turf, epiQ TRACKS™ X1000 chosen for brand new $12 million BG Products Veterans Sports Complex scheduled for fall completion

EL DORADO, Kansas (February 17, 2012) – Hellas Sports Construction of Austin, Texas has been selected as the synthetic turf and track provider for the $12 million BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado. Installation of the new Matrix synthetic turf and epiQ X1000 track system is scheduled to begin this summer.

The complex will serve as the home field for Butler and El Dorado High School, including the Butler Grizzlies’ six-time national champion football team. Ranked No.2 nationally in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll this past season, the Grizzlies are the only program in NJCAA history to twice win back-to-back national championships, the first time in 1998 and 1999 and most recently in 2007 and 2008.

For Butler athletic director Todd “TC” Carter, the Hellas turf and track system are a welcomed addition to his athletic department. “The Matrix turf and epiQ running track give our student athletes the best surfaces to play on and ultimately gives them the ability to be the best they can be.”

Scheduled to open this fall, the stadium will feature over 98,000 square feet of Matrix turf with permanent lines for football and soccer.

“We are excited about the state-of-the-art components at the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex including the Matrix turf and epiQ X1000 track to maximize the ability of our athletes to compete regardless of weather conditions,” said Stacy Cofer, chief advancement officer at the Butler Community College Foundation.

“Hellas Construction was selected among a competitive pool of vendors and we are proud to be associated with their top of the line products.”

The stadium is a joint project serving El Dorado public schools, Butler Community College and the city of El Dorado. Part of a larger economic development, the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex intends to host NJCAA and Kansas State High School Activities Association sporting events, fireworks shows, concerts and other community activities, and also provide space for commercial development.

Hellas’ patented Matrix turf has been utilized by numerous high-profile clients such as Dallas Cowboys Stadium and is the turf industry’s paramount product. It is comprised of two monofilament yarns that are manufactured in different sizes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lights, the color combination provides exceptional light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled turf bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.

The epiQ TRACK X1000 is an IAAF-certified, impermeable track surface made of high performance raw materials and a sustainable manufacturing process using non-petroleum based materials. A layered base-mat system, the X1000 utilizes a single case sealer (SCS), which provides a thixotropic effect with a seamless binding single layer by creating a mechanical lock with the subsequent layer. The epiQ TRACKS product line uses eco-friendly, renewable resources and do not contain solvents, heavy metals or other toxic materials.

The Matrix and epiQ products can be found at high schools throughout the state of Kansas, including Liberal High School, Halstead High School and over $11 million worth of design-build projects within the Wichita USD 259 (South High School, Northwest High School, Southeast High School, Heights High School, and East High School) that consist of five running tracks, six synthetic turf fields and thirty-two tennis courts.

Football Powerhouse Allen ISD Selects Hellas Sports Construction
For Brand New $60 Million Stadium

Matrix®Turf chosen for largest Texas high school football stadium
dedicated to one team

ALLEN, Texas (February 7, 2012) – They say everything is bigger in Texas and Allen Independent School District is no exception with construction underway on the new $60 million football stadium. Slated to open in July, the Eagles will unveil the larger-than-life facility on the industry-leading Matrix® synthetic turf system by Hellas Sports Construction.

Resembling a college-style coliseum with the sunken bowl design and generous 18,000 seating capacity, Eagles Stadium will feature over 90,000 square feet of Matrix turf with permanent lines for football and soccer and the CushDrain® elastic shock pad for improved shock absorption and drainage. Once complete, the Class 5A powerhouse will have the largest high school football stadium dedicated to one team in the state of Texas.

For Allen athletic director Steve Williams, the twenty-plus year relationship of working with Reed J. Seaton and Hellas Construction has been an enjoyable experience.

“Along with their excellent customer service and turn-key operation, I feel Hellas has the best product on the market today,” said Williams. “You hear people say they are Chevy people. Some say they are Ford people. We are Hellas people.”

Other highlights include a two-tier press box, a high-definition video replay scoreboard, outdoor plazas, a Wall of Honor, a training room for the wrestling team and an indoor golf practice area.

The stadium is part of the $119 million bond initiative that passed in May 2009, which includes a new fine art auditorium and transportation service center for the district.
A growing city of nearly 85,000 residents, the Dallas suburb has a student body of over 5,000, including a 650-member marching band, the largest in the nation.

According to Williams, the current stadium was built back in 1976 and was originally designed for a Class 3A program with a 7,200 capacity. Despite their best efforts to adapt to the school’s growth, the need for a bigger stadium was evident.

“Even after two expansions and the addition of temporary seating for 7,000, we are still unable to accommodate everyone — the fans, our concessions, the media and so on,” said Williams.

The new Matrix field will give Allen ISD the ability to rent out the facility for playoff games and band competitions, host graduation ceremonies, and even the option to be a concert venue. Williams says plans are also in the works to possibly host some high school classics and Division-II college football games.

Bowl Games Played on Advanced Matrix® Turf and Convertible Fields
– A Stadium Trend?

Valero Alamo Bowl, Hyundai Sun Bowl and the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic spotlight the Matrix® turf systems by Hellas Sports Construction

AUSTIN, Texas (January 23, 2011) – Austin-based surfacing contractor, Hellas Sports Construction, and its advanced Matrix® synthetic turf systems were in the national spotlight with the recent AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, Hyundai Sun Bowl and Valero Alamo Bowl. Two out of the three bowl venues have convertible fields allowing for quick removal and installation of turf allowing many other events besides football.

For the 76th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington played host to the SEC’s Arkansas Razorbacks vs. the Big 12’s Kansas State Wildcats. In a game that proved why both teams ranked in the top 15 of the Bowl Championship Series standings, the tenacious Razorback defense held Kansas State to only two touchdowns as Arkansas went on to win 29-16 for its school record tying 11th victory.

Since moving from the Cotton Bowl to Cowboys Stadium in 2010, the Classic has been played on Hellas’ most cutting edge installation of Matrix turf, in conjunction with its exclusive SoftTop™ removable “roll-up” turf system allowing for the conversion of three separate fields. The Cotton Bowl is played on the collegiate field, the Dallas Cowboys play on the Pro Field and there is a FIFA Certified Soccer field available for installation maximizing utilization of the Stadium while providing a premium surface for athletes.

In another match-up showcasing the Matrix system, the Hyundai Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas) was a thriller to the end with Utah’s John White plowing into the end zone from 8 yards out to give the Utes a 30-27 overtime victory against Georgia Tech. After tying the game with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter, Utah took advantage of a missed field goal by the Yellow Jackets at the end of regulation and scored on its next possession in overtime to capture its eighth win of the season. Hired to replace the field in 2009, Hellas completed the Sun Bowl Stadium installation in record time with only a two-week window to have the Matrix turf ready for play.

The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas served as the site for one of the more highly anticipated bowls games of the year as the Washington Huskies and No. 15 Baylor Bears went head-to-head in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Living up to the hype, the game broke 10 NCAA bowl records, including the 123 total points for the most in Alamo Bowl history. The Bears managed to pull out the 67-56 win and did so in front of a national audience of 5.1 million households making it the #5 most-watched bowl game in ESPN history.

Hellas Construction first installed the Alamodome’s state-of-the-art SoftTop™ turf roll up system in 2001 and again in 2010. Designed to be a removable “roll-up” turf system, SoftTop™ provides the Alamodome the ability to accommodate a wide variety of sporting and non-sporting events, with no adverse effects on the playability of the turf. The interest in convertible fields is clearly increasing, as well as return customers.

Hellas’ patented Matrix turf has been utilized by numerous high-profile clients and is the turf industry’s paramount product. It is comprised of two monofilament (spinneret) yarns that are manufactured in different sizes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lights, the color combination provides exceptional light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled tuft bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.

Robert Griffin III Brings Home a Reason to Celebrate for Baylor University

AUSTIN, TX (December 14, 2011) –– The junior quarterback bearing the notable acronym, RG3 beat the odds Saturday night, becoming Baylor’s first ever player to take home college football’s most legendary trophy. It may be coincidence that Griffin’s home field and training surface is the inimitable Matrix Turf system, but we’re betting not.

As grueling as football schedules can be, the Matrix Turf system helps athletes maintain a higher degree of physical health and stamina, even in poor weather. Heavy precipitation and mud become non-issues for schools boasting the System, as the proprietary infill, fibers and draining properties keep fields playable in even the most challenging of conditions.

Having a synthetic turf field at home has helped eleven of the Top 25 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) teams tally a winning season this year. Following last weekend’s conference championships, these teams have a combined win-loss record of 110-25, representing a total 81% win percentage. Perhaps this merely represents the correlation of investment in football programs with their success, but the odds are nevertheless eye opening.

The Matrix system chosen by Baylor University is the turf industry’s paramount product and is comprised of special monofilament (spinneret) yarns in different sizes, shapes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lighting the color combination provides excellent light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provide an unparalleled tuft bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.

RG3 is the seventh Heisman winner from a Texas school and the first since the University of Texas running back, Ricky Williams took home the trophy in 1998. He is the fifth Heisman winner representing the Big 12 Conference and the 29th quarterback ever honored.

AUSTIN, TX (December 12, 2011) –– The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Athletic Department announced that the University will partner with Hellas Sports Construction for the installation of Matrix Baseball turf system including the revolutionary Hi-Slide synthetic turf for the bases at Gary Hogan Field.

Head Baseball Coach, Scott Norwood is eager to inaugurate the 2012 season on new Matrix Baseball Hi-Slide synthetic turf. UALR carefully evaluated each turf solution in order to make an educated decision on the renovation of their field. Norwood stated, “While exploring our options in selecting turf Hellas offered the best overall product from top to bottom. Matrix Baseball Hi-Slide has a great playing surface and plays very true.”

Matrix Baseball Hi-Slide synthetic turf is a unique baseball/softball surface that maximizes ball-roll, bounce and playability for all aspects of the game and is the most advanced turf system on the market today. The specialty baseball turf has a shorter pile height than football turf without compromising looks or softness of the turf. The system is built and installed without dirt or clay. The sliding boxes are made out of turf, which creates a uniform surface that requires little maintenance. The unique installation also allows for high traffic areas to be easily replaced after years of wear, without having to replace the entire field.

UALR’s timeline was extremely important, as their project required removal of the old Astroturf field, drainage repair and installation of new Matrix Baseball Hi-Slide synthetic turf, which is a 30–day process. Norwood specifically looked for a partner that could accommodate their needs. “Hellas was able to mobilize quickly and get it done. We were given updated and precise information on how the turf would be installed and the time frame that it would take to be completed,” Norwood replied. UALR’s other main objective was safety. “We wanted the best product and I know Hellas provides the best surface for play and most of all, safety. Hellas has been a first class organization and I would recommend using them for any turf needs you have.”
